How do you think a Tuareg's life might be different from that of someone who lives along the Nile?
  • Tuareg are always traveling, and therefore, used to it. If you are living on the Nile, you don't really travel, maybe just going to a town to get supplies. Plus, Tuareg are usually in groups with others.

In what ways are people trying to control their environment?
  • They use irrigation to get water to their crops. Storing and finding water is very important too incase a drought comes. Some water, minus the Nile River's, can come from the dew drops of plants.

Why do farmers use irrigation?
  • To get water to their crops from the Nile River instead of having to walk back and forth, or using up their own personal water supplies.

How do dams affect farming?
  • They have giant dams that prevent the Nile River from flooding, since if it did, it would ruin the crops.

How is the land changing in the Sahel?
  • They have less vegetation growth because it doesn't really rain there. Also, animals cause a lot of overgrazing, and since it doens't rain, the grass doesn't grow back. Sadly, the change doesn't seem to be for the better.

How do both herbivores and carnivores depend on the savanna?
Well, grasses and trees grow with the sun and water, herbivors(plant-eating ) eat the plants, and carnivors(meat-eating) eat the herbivors. This is called the food chain. Without one of them, the other would starve and die.

Why are so many countries joining their national parks together?
When animals migrate, they often break fences. These fences can be borders with one country and another, so, to make sure that this doesn't happen, they merge them. This causes countries to be friendly with each other, make money, and tourists won't have to obtain permission to cross borders.
National Parks

How are national parks sometimes a problem for people of the savanna? In what ways do they help people of the savanna?
Hunters and farmers do not like this because hunters obviously cannot hunt since the animals are under protection, and farmers often loose good land because animals come on it. They sometimes can't get more land, either because of the animals.

How does sustainable development help people and animals in Kruger National Park in South Africa?
Well, they have over 3,000 jobs for people, and these jobs are park rangers, safari guides, or anything else that tourists would need. Local artists also make items to sell to locals and tourists alike. This gives people money, a job, and protects the wildlife all at once.

Chapter 3
Describe characteristics of plant growth in the rain forest. Describe what you might see while walking in a rain forest. How might your skin feel? What might you hear?
